The ritual

Light a light.

Fifteen minutes before sunset, a light comes on — a small nudge to step outside, pause, catch the beauty in front of you, and hold someone who's no longer here. Set it up whatever way fits your life. Or just light a candle.

Step one · your window tonight

Step two · choose how you'll hold it

Apple Home (iPhone / iPad)

  1. Open Home+Add AutomationA Time of Day.
  2. Pick Sunset, set the offset to 15 minutes before → choose your light → On, warm and low .
  3. Add a second automation: Sunset, offset 15 minutes after → same light → Off.
To mirror the sky, set the light to fade in slowly (or use a warm "sunset" scene) so it warms up over those 15 minutes. Apple Home tracks real sunset for you.

Google Home

  1. Google Home app → Automations (household/personal automation).
  2. Starter: Sunset, offset −15 minutes → Action: turn on your light, warm and low .
  3. Add action: Wait 30 minutes → turn the light off.
Even easier by voice — see Just say it out loud below. Google tracks sunset automatically.

Amazon Alexa

  1. Alexa app → MoreRoutines.
  2. WhenScheduleSunset → offset −15 minutes.
  3. Add: turn on the light (warm, low ) → add Wait 30 minutes → turn off.
Alexa recalculates sunset for your location each day.

Nanoleaf app

  1. Open the Nanoleaf app → tap the clock icon (Schedules) → +.
  2. Set it to turn on at , choose a warm scene at low brightness , and pick every day.
  3. Add a second schedule to turn off at .
Heads up: the Nanoleaf app uses fixed clock times, so it won't shift with sunset on its own — nudge it every few weeks, or use Apple / Google / Alexa above to auto-track. (Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs & lightstrips can only be scheduled through Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings.)

Google Gemini for Home

"Hey Google, create an automation to turn on my living-room lights 15 minutes before sunset and turn them off 15 minutes after, every day."

  1. Gemini builds the whole routine from that one sentence.
Needs the newer Google Home app with Gemini for Home (rolling out in early access; a few advanced features need a Home subscription).

Siri

Siri can't build a Home automation by voice yet — but it's perfect for the reminder:

"Hey Siri, remind me every day at to light a candle and step outside."

  1. For the lights, set it up once in the Home app (Apple Home, above)…
  2. …or make an iPhone Shortcuts automation: Shortcuts → Automation+Time of DaySunset (offset −15) → run your light scene or play a song.

Alexa (voice)

Alexa sets reminders by voice; build the light routine in the app (above).

"Alexa, remind me every day at to pause and light a light."

Set a daily alarm for . When it sounds, light your light and step outside — carried by a song that holds them.

iPhone

  1. Open the Clock app → Alarm+ → set Repeat · Every Day.
  2. Tap SoundPick a song. (Apple Music songs need to be downloaded to your phone first.)
Want any Spotify or Apple Music track with a gentle fade-in? A music-alarm app like Alarmify handles the full catalog and a soft swell.

Android

  1. Open the Clock app → Alarm+ → set → repeat daily.
  2. Tap the sound / ringtone → choose Spotify (Google Clock links Spotify & YouTube Music) → pick the song.
Turn on gradual / fade-in so it rises softly instead of jolting.

A voice in the room at dusk — a short poem, a line of philosophy, or words that were theirs. Something new to receive each night.

iPhone — Shortcuts (the most dependable)

  1. Shortcuts app → Automation+Time of DaySunset (offset 15 min before).
  2. Build the shortcut: a Text block holding lines you love (poems, sayings, their words) → Get Random Item from it → Speak Text.
  3. Set it to run without asking. Each dusk, it reads a different one aloud.
Because you fill the list, it can hold what was truly theirs. Add to it whenever a line finds you.

Alexa — a daily reading, spoken

  1. In the Alexa app, enable a daily-poem or daily-reflection skill (search "poem of the day" or "daily inspiration").
  2. Alexa app → Routines+ → When: Schedule · Sunset, offset −15 min.
  3. Action → Skills (or "Custom") → open that skill, so it reads the day's piece aloud.
The most turnkey way to hear something new, spoken, on schedule.

Google

Two honest paths, depending on what you have:

Fresh words each night, as a note. In the Gemini app, schedule a recurring action:

"Every evening at , share a short, tender poem or reflection on love, memory, and gratitude."

Gemini writes something new daily and delivers it. (Needs a paid Gemini plan; it arrives as a notification you can have read aloud.)

Spoken on your Nest speaker. A Google Home routine at sunset can speak a set message, but reading a freshly written poem aloud on a schedule isn't reliably supported yet — so a fixed blessing works on the speaker today, while the Gemini route above is better for new words each night.

Where to draw from: Poem-a-Day (poets.org), a daily Stoic passage, a favorite poet — or, most of all, the words they loved. Keep the ask warm: reflections on love and remembrance, not sorrow. You can also draw from the shared well further down this page.
  1. Add a daily calendar reminder at , following the real sunset:

A gentle notification while this tab stays open. For a reminder that works every day with the tab closed, use the calendar above.

Or just say: "Hey Siri / Hey Google, remind me every day at to pause and light a light."
  1. When your reminder or alarm arrives, light anything — a candle, a lamp, your phone face-up in the window.
  2. Step outside for the sunset. Sit for a few minutes. Let it be for them.
The light matters more than the hardware. A candle in a window has done this work for a very long time.
Words for dusk · a shared well

Short reflections to read at your window — and to leave for whoever comes after you. The ones that hold people rise gently toward the top, shuffled fresh each visit.

Kept short and gentle. When this is live, what you add is shared with everyone who visits — so it's tended with care.
